The story began around 1:12 a.m., Thursday, May 30, when City of Poughkeepsie police were called to a home on Yates Boulevard for a domestic disturbance and a person shot, said City of Poughkeepsie Police Det. Lt. MJ Clark.

Responding officers found that 29-year-old Adam Hannon had been shot once in the forearm by his 25-year-old brother, Zachary Hannon, during an altercation, police said.

The altercation started when the older brother was brought home by his parents from MidHudson Regional Hospital where he had been treated for a medical emergency.

Clark said that once home from the hospital, Adam Hannon was inside the garage of the home when he allegedly attacked the step-father who was trying to prevent him from leaving on his motorcycle.

The mother called her other son for help. This son, Zachary Hannon, came to help his step-father but stopped first to grab a gun from his parent’s room.

Upon reaching the garage, the brothers became involved in a physical fight as Zachary Hannon attempted to help his step-father, police said.

During the fight the gun went off, shooting the 28-year-old brother in the arm, Clark said.

At the same time in the Town of Poughkeepsie, police were responding to MidHudson Regional Hospital, for a report that the older brother had made "terroristic threats," to hospital staff as he was leaving after being treated for other injuries, said Capt. Kevin Faber, with the Town of Poughkeepsie Police.

According to Faber, the elder brother told staff "He would return with a firearm and kill some people." By the time police arrived, he had left with his parents and was back at home fighting with his brother.

Following the shooting, the younger brother was arrested by the City of Poughkeepsie police and charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

He was arraigned and sent to the Dutchess County Jail on $20,000 cash/$40,000 bail.

The brother who was shot was taken to Vassar Brother Medical Center for treatment of a non-life threatening injury to his forearm.

He was arrested after his release by the Town of Poughkeepsie Police for making the threats at the hospital and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail on $20,000 cash/$40,000 bail.

When the City of Poughkeepsie Police visited Adam Hannon's home they removed numerous firearms, Faber said.
